I am truly amazed at the number of websites that continue to be built using a spalsh page. A splash page is typically a graphic, with a link saying enter. The only problem is, is that the rest of the site does not get spidered and indexed by the search engines. You will see only the splash page indexed. A quick fix to this is to put the navigation links on the splash page, allowing the search engines to crawl the rest of the site. The better solution is to remove the splash page. It's hard for most people to think about the user experience and how you should setup their website for their target audience during the web design process. One thing to make sure, is to have a call to action on each page of your website to make it easy for the user to either buy your product or service, or contact you for additional information. Go through each page of your site in your customer's shoes, and make sure not only the navigation of the site makes sense, but a call to action is available. You need to make your content accessible to the user as quickly as possible, and the more call to actions, the higher your site conversions will be. You will also want to be able to track these conversions or call to actions. If your site is small and you don't have allot of products, you can keep track with a note book. If you have a larger site, you will want to implement a tracking software to track not only traffic, but sales and how the sales were generated.

The downside is that you pay for each and every visitor that comes to your site, which can get expensive over time. You will want to track the traffic and the conversions, to make sure you are making a profit and not just running through your budget. Search engine optimization covers two main areas these days. The first is optimizing the actual things on your site, such as the META data. This is the first step in getting your site ranked higher in the search engines. The name of the game here is choosing the right keywords, not only for traffic, but for conversion. The second part of the formula is back links. Back links are text links from other relevant websites pointing back to your site, such as INTERNET MARKETING. The hard part is contacting other sites to link to you which can be a very time consuming and exhaustive task. You will want to make sure your site is in some of the major directories, such as the Yahoo Directory and DMOZ.org. You can also buy links, however most link brokers charge a pretty hefty fee, and charge for the links monthly. If you stop paying for the links, you no longer have the links pointing at your site.
